At Sleeping with Angels, we are a community charity dedicated to supporting families who experience the heart-wrenching loss of a baby. Born from our own personal experiences with baby loss, our mission is to provide comfort and dignity during one of life’s most painful times. Through our angel gowns/cribs, lovingly crafted from donated wedding dresses, we offer families a small but meaningful gesture of love and remembrance.
In addition to the gowns, we are deeply grateful for the knitting groups across the UK, who generously donate blankets, hats, and cardigans. These handmade items provide warmth and comfort to grieving families, offering a sense of peace during their darkest time.
Partnering with hospitals across London, we make sure that these precious items are available at no cost to families when they need them most. Every gown, blanket, and hat is a reflection of the kindness and generosity of people from all walks of life, coming together to offer comfort during the most difficult journey.
Sleeping with Angels believe that even the briefest of lives should be remembered with love and dignity. Through the support of our community and the kindness of our donors, we strive to offer families a lasting memory of their little ones.
Once we receive your gown, it will be assigned a Donor Number and logged on our system. The Donor Number is physically written on the gown, so it cannot be mislaid throughout the redesigning process.
Please note, all gowns must be clean and odour free.
The second stage of the process is to take photos of your gown, with your name shown and upload to our social media sites. You are more than welcome to forward photos of you in your gown, we will upload these at the same time. If you wish, you can comment and perhaps leave a message as to why you decided to donate your gown.
We remove all underskirt tulle (this is donated to a local charitable fabric and art project). Removing the underskirt at this stage helps us with storage, which is often limited.
Unfortunately, we cannot accept wedding dresses that are made from tulle, underskirt tulle/netting is fine, but not an overskirt made from tulle. This fabric is not suitable for our angel gowns, and we would rather be honest and upfront, so that you can donate your gown to a group that will make the most of your precious gown.
As we receive numerous gowns for redesign, we try to repurpose gowns in the order we receive them; until such time your gown will be stored safely and appropriately.
Once we start working on your gown, we will deconstruct it completely; bodice from skirt, zip removed etc; keeping the sections of the gowns as complete as possible to ensure we make as many gowns as possible. Some hospitals request only plain gowns, no ribbons, lace etc; the plain wedding gown skirts are perfect for these. Other hospitals are happy to have gowns that use more details from the wedding gown. It is vital that we make our gowns to the specification of the hospitals we supply.
Once your gown is fully repurposed a card is attached that reads:
‘Separated only by time’
This card is given to every parent who receives a burial gown/crib from us.
We are so grateful you entrusted us with your precious gown; we promise to work on your gown with respect, love and care and ensure any request we receive for a baby burial gown/crib is fulfilled.
We are always looking for volunteers to help us in the creation of the angel gowns/cosies etc. We need people who can sew and/or knit, those who are able to deconstruct gowns in preparation for sewists.
Sewing and/or knitting is not a requirement, just someone willing to help i.e. social media, fundraising, admin and those who want to get involved and be a part of a group making a difference.
Here are some Guidelines to help you decide if you would like to join us making something beautiful for a baby’s final journey. You will need to:
· Have moderate to advanced sewing skills. We provide the patterns and instructions; and we are always at the end of the phone if you need help or just a chat
· Be respectful and caring when repurposing donated wedding gowns into angel gowns/cosies etc
· Be creative
· Have the ability and time to transform wedding gowns into angel gowns/cribs, etc. Typical completion time is within a 3-5 month timeframe. If there is any difficulty working within this timeframe, please notify us asap as there is always someone willing to help
· Email 2-3 photos of previous work, this gives us an idea of the type of item we allocate to you
· Provide physical and email addresses, with contact phone number. This information will be stored securely and will not be shared unless you have given us specific authorisation to do so
· Have a Facebook account as we share important announcements and information on our Facebook page
· Live within the United Kingdom
We foster a strong sense of community through our supportive WhatsApp group, regular in-person and Zoom events, and opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals while learning new skills. You're never alone—our shared mission is to ensure every baby’s final journey is handled with dignity and respect, bringing comfort to grieving parents. We’d love for you to join us—don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions!
We receive a considerable number of wedding gowns to redesign into Angel Gowns/cosies etc. The sundries to make these beautiful gowns can be costly, therefore, we ask if you would consider helping us to fulfil the requests received from hospitals by purchasing any of the following. This enables our sewists to continue with their invaluable work to give comfort to grieving parents. No donation is too small!
We have selected items from Amazon, but obviously you can purchase from any supplier. Please click on this link for our Amazon Wish List:
